It seems so appropriate to launch the Ruby Shoes Wine Club by profiling Calcarous Winery. http://www.calcareous.com/
That’s because it was my first connecting the dots that returning to your roots doesn’t mean having to leave behind the homes you found elsewhere. Shorly after I moved back to the Central Coast, I attended the Paso Robles Wine Festival. http://www.pasowine.com/events/winefestival.php
I was still feeling a bit unsettled. Afterall, it had been almost 16 years and a lot had changed, even though so much felt familiar and right. And as I approached a winery table to sample what they were pouring there, who do I happen to run into? An Iowan. Dana Brown is the owner of Calcarous, following through on the dream started by her father, the late Lloyd Messer, a well known Iowan and longtime owner of a wine and beer distributing business in Sioux City.
While I was off chasing broadcasting dreams in Iowa, Lloyd was dreaming of his vineyard in my home turf, after recognizing Paso Robles as an emerging area for the production of premium wine. Lloyd’s dream lives in a gorgeous winery above the hills of Paso Robles, and if feels like home for me in so many ways to pay a visit there. I love that I’m home near my roots. I love that I am going to run into friends from Iowa like John or Dana, and how my worlds collide in this beautiful setting. Oh yeah, and I love their wines!
Check out our Events page at /Central-Coast-Wine-Country/Events to see the fantastic things happening up on the hill at Calcareous this summer. They are doing Wine Down Wednesdays, monthly Summer Concerts, Yoga and Breakfast, and Wine Blending. Enjoy the fine life like a club member of Calcareous!
